MM Collective's Ceramic Vases Translate Peony, Lily, and Tulip into Generative Code Patterns
MK Designers, comprised of graphic designer Michaela Zdeňková and product designer Marek Kounovský, have introduced MMcollective, a trio of ceramic vases that blend product design with generative coding. Inspired by the peony, lily, and tulip, each flower holds personal significance: Zdeňková favors the peony, Kounovský prefers the lily, and both chose the tulip, symbolizing their tradition of exchanging flowers. Each vase utilizes a specific flower as input data, which is transformed into an abstract design through digital coding, creating a graphic pattern on the ceramic surface. The original floral inspirations become less discernible in the final pieces, illustrating the transition from natural forms to digital code to tangible objects. This project, which explores the interplay of graphic and spatial design, was submitted via designboom's DIY feature and edited by Christina Vergopoulou.
Key facts

- The series consists of three ceramic vases inspired by the peony, lily, and tulip.
- Each vase combines a product-designed physical form with a graphic layer created through generative coding.
- The peony is the graphic designer's favorite flower, the lily the product designer's, and the tulip was chosen by both.
- The designers share a habit of giving each other flowers, which informed the selection.
- Floral motifs are translated into abstract structures via digital code and transferred onto the ceramic surface.
- The original flowers are not immediately recognizable in the finished vases.
- The project was submitted through designboom's DIY submissions feature and edited by Christina Vergopoulou.
