Mikayel Ohanjanyan's 'Legami: Ties That Bind' at mudaC Carrara

Armenian sculptor Mikayel Ohanjanyan (b. 1976, Yerevan) presents 'Legami: Ties That Bind' at mudaC | Museo delle Arti di Carrara, running from February 14 to August 30, 2026. The exhibition comprises five marble sculptures—two large and three small—conceived as a single installation but each autonomous. Ohanjanyan uses white Carrara marble and stainless steel cables to explore tension, vulnerability, and relationality. The steel cables compress and incise the marble, creating a dynamic equilibrium that mirrors human relationships. The artist, trained at the State Academy of Fine Arts of Yerevan and the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence, has exhibited internationally: the Armenian Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015, Golden Lion winner), Frieze Sculpture Park at Regent's Park (2016), FIAC On Site at Petit Palais (2017), and won the Premio Internazionale d'Arte Contemporanea E. Marinelli (2018) for the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo di Firenze. In 2021, he won a Vatican/CEI competition for liturgical artworks at the Don Giovanni Bosco church in Bagheria, Sicily. Curated by Christopher Atamian and Tamar Hovsepian (Atamian Hovsepian Curatorial Practice, New York), the show invites viewers on an inner journey, emphasizing that identity is a network of belonging rather than a static condition. Ohanjanyan is currently focusing on establishing a new studio in Carrara.
