Mihaly Slocombe Transforms Weatherboard Cottage into Sculptural Forever Home

architecture-design · 2026-08-26

Australian architecture firm Mihaly Slocombe has completed the Fringe Dweller Residence, a sculptural extension to a weatherboard cottage in Clifton Hill, Australia. The project, completed in 2023, covers 307 square meters and was led by architects Erica Slocombe and Warwick Mihaly, with design team member Sinead Lim. The general contractor was Dimpat, with environmental sustainability consulting by Flying Yellow, quantity surveying by PlanCost, structural engineering by Webb Consult, and geotechnical services by Statewide Geotechnical. The residence was curated by Miwa Negoro, and photographs were taken by Tatjana Plitt. The design balances openness with privacy, strength with softness, and historical identity with future needs, transforming the modest cottage into a proud forever home.
