Michener Art Museum Examines Washington Crossing the Delaware Myth in New Exhibition

The Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, presents 'The Crossing: Picturing the American Revolution,' on view through January 10, 2027. The exhibition deconstructs the myth of George Washington's 1776 Delaware River crossing by juxtaposing historic paintings with contemporary responses. It includes the first museum presentation of Ai Weiwei's 'Washington Crossing the Delaware' (2023), a monumental toy brick reproduction measuring 267 ¾ × 157 ½ inches. Vanessa German's immersive installation 'Miracles and Glory Abound' (2018) features full-sized figures from found objects. Historical works include Emmanuel Leutze's iconic 1851 painting, Thomas Sully's 1819 'The Passage of the Delaware,' and Edward Hicks's 'Washington at the Delaware' from the 1830s. Contemporary artists also featured are Mark Thomas Gibson with 'Returns on a Homeward Tide' (2025) and Kent Monkman with 'Resurgence of the People' (2021). The show runs through January 10, 2027.
