Michele De Lucchi designs interiors for Azimut's Magellano 27M superyacht

architecture-design · 2026-09-09

Italian architect and designer Michele De Lucchi, known for his work with Olivetti and as a co-founder of the Memphis Group, has created the interior design for Azimut's new Magellano 27M superyacht, marking his first foray into nautical design. The yacht, set to launch in September 2026, is the third generation of the Magellano range, which was originally introduced in 2009 as an 'SUV of the seas.' De Lucchi, who has collaborated with Azimut for over a decade on land-based projects including the company's headquarters, worked with his studio AMDL Circle and Davide Angeli on the interior. The design features sinuous wooden elements, predominantly light oak, chosen for its transformative patina, along with travertine, metal, and integrated lighting. The interior draws inspiration from Mediterranean architecture and Japanese craftsmanship, including a wall upholstered in fabric from Kyoto's Hosoo company, founded in 1688. Giovanna Vitelli, chair of Azimut Benetti, initiated the collaboration, emphasizing the need for each yacht range to have a designer whose 'soul' matches the vessel's character. The exterior design was refined by Finnish yacht designer Jarkko Jämsén. De Lucchi described the experience as imagining an interior that continuously changes with the journey and one's state of mind. Vitelli sees the yacht as reflecting a post-pandemic shift toward wellness and culture in luxury yachting.
