MICAS Opens in Malta's Floriana Fortifications

The Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) opened in October 2024 within restored 17th-century fortifications in Floriana, Malta. The museum, which lacks a permanent collection, focuses on temporary exhibitions. Initiated in 2015 by executive board president Phyllis Muscat, the project was delayed by the pandemic and the Ukraine war. The restoration, led by Malta's Restoration Directorate with Ipostudio and architect Hermann Bonnici, cost €32 million (€23 million from the Maltese state, €9 million from the European Regional Development Fund). The design features a steel roof that avoids perforating historic walls. The 8,360 m² complex includes 1,400 m² of galleries across four levels, with an 18-meter ceiling. Opening exhibitions featured Joana Vasconcelos, Milton Avery, Reggie Burrows Hodges, and Ray Pitrè. Vasconcelos's immersive works like Tree of Life exploit the vast volumes, while the painting exhibition for Avery required curved partitions by scenographer Cécile Degos to compensate for irregular limestone walls and gun loops. The site, originally the Ospizio di Floriana (built 1667), later served as a hospice and an electricity company warehouse before falling into ruin.
