Meta to Pay $17 Billion in Landmark Teen Social Media Addiction Settlement

Meta Platforms has reached a $17 billion settlement and will introduce child-safety initiatives on Facebook and Instagram to resolve a significant lawsuit concerning adolescent social media addiction. This agreement, revealed by state attorneys general on Wednesday, addresses claims from 47 US states, including California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey, which initiated legal action against the tech company in 2023. The anticipated trial, where CEO Mark Zuckerberg was set to testify in a California federal court, has been halted due to this settlement. Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones noted that Virginia's share of the settlement amounts to $353 million, marking it as one of the largest in the history of state consumer protection. Jones criticized Meta for misleading the public regarding harmful design features affecting youth mental health but stated that the settlement will halt these practices and enhance online safety for children. In a blog post, Meta affirmed its dedication to empowering parents and assisting teens, mentioning collaboration with state attorneys general to establish a new industry benchmark. The settlement will introduce various safety enhancements for young users on Instagram and Facebook, representing a major regulatory step against social media companies.
