Met Museum Survey Examines Lillian Bassman's Fashion Photography Artifice

At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you can check out "Lillian Bassman: Bazaar and Beyond," a focused look at the famous photographer's influence in fashion from the 1940s right up to the 2000s. Bassman started her journey in the early 1940s as an illustrator, mentored by Harper's Bazaar's art director, Alexey Brodovitch. By the end of that decade, she was already making waves with covers and editorials for the magazine. This exhibit features a variety of works like photo collages, magazine covers, and test prints, showcasing early 20th-century modernist styles, including inspirations from Dada artist Hannah Höch. Curated by Virginia McBride, the display will be open at the Met’s Fifth Avenue until July 26.
