Met Museum Exhibition Recontextualizes Orientalist Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has opened a new exhibition that reexamines Orientalist paintings by placing them alongside works created by artists from the regions historically depicted as the 'East.' The show challenges the colonial fantasies embedded in Western Orientalist art by presenting an internal perspective. Curated by a team including Navina Haidar, the exhibition features over 200 works spanning the 16th to 20th centuries. It includes paintings by European artists such as Eugène Delacroix and Jean-Léon Gérôme, juxtaposed with works by artists from North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, including Osman Hamdi Bey and Mahmoud Sabri. The exhibition aims to deconstruct stereotypes and offer a more nuanced understanding of cultural exchange. It runs through January 2027.
