Meadow House: A Modernist-Inspired Family Residence in Essex by Ström Architects

Ström Architects has finalized the construction of Meadow House, a private dwelling set on six acres in Essex, England, drawing inspiration from the modernist pavilions of Philip Johnson and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Under the guidance of Swedish architect Magnus Ström, the residence spans 560 sq m and is designed in a pinwheel configuration, consisting of four distinct quadrants: entry spaces, a guest suite, the owners' quarters, and living areas. Each wing incorporates low structures with overhanging roofs to enhance views of the fields. A central section houses a home office. Landscape designer Emily Erlam crafted gardens that include a pool. The house, which replaces a previous structure, employs natural materials and a 'broken plan' layout, with eco-friendly features fulfilling over 70% of its energy needs through renewable sources. The primary suite boasts a wood-panelled bedroom and a terrace.
