McCormick Gallery Showcases Abstract Expressionist Mary Abbott

McCormick Gallery in Chicago presents an exhibition of works by Mary Abbott (1921-2019), a female Abstract Expressionist who was central to the post-war New York art scene. Abbott studied at the short-lived Subjects of the Artist school (1948) with Mark Rothko, William Baziotes, Barnett Newman, David Hare, and Robert Motherwell. She exhibited at MoMA, Kootz Gallery, Tanager, Robert Keen, Stable Gallery, Signa, Kornblee, and Tibor de Nagy. After a divorce, she taught in Minneapolis in the 1970s before returning to New York. Dealer Tom McCormick began representing her in 2002. In 2016, she was included in the Denver Art Museum's groundbreaking "Women of Abstract Expressionism" exhibition. Her work ranges from gestural abstractions like "Cry Still" (c.1960) to later watercolors of the sea, inspired by her father, a decorated submarine commander. The show's title comes from an inscription on a watercolor: "I Am a Sailor's Daughter."
