Max Bill retrospective 'La grammatica della bellezza' opens at m.a.x. museo in Chiasso

The m.a.x. museo in Chiasso, Switzerland, presents 'Max Bill (1908-1994): La grammatica della bellezza', a monographic exhibition dedicated to the Swiss artist, architect, and designer Max Bill. Curated by Karin Gimmi and Nicoletta Ossanna Cavadini, the show explores Bill's fusion of order and freedom, method and inventiveness, emphasizing the inextricable link between form and a libertarian worldview. The first room reconstructs his formative years, highlighting early paintings and his experiences with libertarian communitarianism. The advent of geometry marks a turning point, with neoconstructivist drawings, paintings, prints, and sculptures embodying a 'democratic' abstraction that creates open works interacting with their environment. The second room focuses on key episodes such as the Swiss Pavilion at the 1936 Triennale, alongside a core of wall works and sculptures showing the maturation of form as absolute space of freedom. Subsequent galleries demonstrate Bill's eclecticism by juxtaposing his architecture, design, and painting. A wide selection of paintings allows full immersion in his aesthetic universe, where permutations, color theory, and perceptual mechanisms form a non-schematic, non-repetitive exploration.
