Matthijs Kimpe's 'Making Traces' Opens at Tatjana Pieters, Ghent

exhibition · 2026-08-28

Belgian artist Matthijs Kimpe presents his third solo exhibition, 'Making Traces,' at Tatjana Pieters gallery in Ghent. The show, which opened recently, features new works that continue Kimpe's exploration of translating visual information, focusing on how errors in translation reveal the nature of the medium. In this series, Kimpe captures spatial forms on flat surfaces, using volumes, actions, and configurations that imprint onto canvas. Chance, negative form, movement, and color become instruments of spatial transcription, creating a distance between action and image. Viewers are invited to read the visual artifacts as traces of past actions. Kimpe's practice is rooted in a fascination with modern image media, including screens and digital prints. He manipulates and deconstructs screens and printers, combining synthetic and optical materials with paint and textures, transforming them from reproduction tools into distinctive objects that display unique images. The viewer's position determines the final appearance of the work, adding an interactive dimension. Born in Belgium in 1987, Kimpe lives and works in Bruges and studied painting at the Sint-Lucas Academy in Ghent. He has previously exhibited at venues including Schouwburg Noord in Antwerp, CAS in Ostend, SMAK, In De Ruimte in Ghent, Kunstkabinet in Ghent, Villa de Olmen in Aalst, het Entrepot in Bruges, Aksent in Ghent, Second Room in Antwerp, and Cultureel Centrum Knokke.
