Matteo Capriotti's 'Big Bang' Explores the Origin of the Mark at Casa Vuota

At Casa Vuota in Rome's Quadraro district, Matteo Capriotti (b. 1996, Tortoreto Lido) presents 'Big Bang,' a solo exhibition running until June 28, 2026. The show investigates the mark as the first generative act of drawing, evolving into painting. Drawings introduce visitors to a primordial state of the sign, with figures emerging as absorbed, embracing, or awaiting form. The exhibition space undergoes a perceptual torsion: the floor becomes a checkerboard altering the domestic environment, creating a liminal surface where images oscillate between presence and illusion. Two large canvases face each other—one a monumental drawing, the other a painting replicating the room—amplifying deformation into a perspectival vortex. After a simulated collapse, the image resurfaces in the final room, where lights, fires, and sparks ignite works of various scales, culminating in a large embrace between two figures emerging from color, symbolizing the union of mark and painting. Capriotti explains that the title 'Big Bang' refers not to a cosmological event but to a pictorial process: the moment a mark inaugurates a constellation of images, relationships, and spatial possibilities.
