Matisse Color Symphony Opens at Carrières des Lumières in Les Baux-de-Provence
A new immersive program at the Carrières des Lumières in Les Baux-de-Provence, produced by Culturespaces, opens on October 9, 2026. The exhibition follows the colors of Henri Matisse rather than a chronological narrative, beginning with the blue of his cut-out Nus bleus and ending with the black of the Vence chapel stained glass. The journey includes the pure tones of Luxe, calme et volupté (1904), the scandalous green of Femme au chapeau at the 1905 Salon, the orange inspired by Algeria and Morocco, the saturated red of L'Atelier rouge, the shifting colors of La Danse, and the yellow of late paper cut-outs such as La Gerbe and L'Escargot. Matisse's lifelong ambition to make color become light is realized in the 15-meter-high limestone quarry. The same session features a short program on Frida Kahlo. The venue is located at Route de Maillane, 13520 Les Baux-de-Provence. Opening hours are 9:30–19:00 daily until October 31, then 10:00–18:00. Admission: €16.50 standard, €15.50 senior, €14 reduced, €13 youth (7–17), €46 family, free for under 7s.
