Matisse and Yves Saint Laurent: A Surprising Dialogue at Musée Matisse, Nice

The Musée Matisse in Nice presents "Henri Matisse – Yves Saint Laurent," an exhibition exploring the deep creative affinities between the painter and the couturier. Curated by Serena Bucalo-Mussely and Aymeric Jeudy, the show is the first to devote an entire hang to their connections, revealing direct citations and formal echoes. Highlights include a coat from YSL's autumn-winter 1970 collection inspired by the catalogue of the 1970 Grand Palais Matisse centenary exhibition, and an evening dress from autumn-winter 1981 that reinterprets Matisse's "La Robe bleue reflétée dans la glace" (1937). The exhibition also traces shared sources: Matisse's "rag library" of fabrics and haute couture pieces, and Saint Laurent's book collection. Both artists were influenced by Orientalism—Matisse through travels to Algeria, Spain, and Morocco; Saint Laurent after a 1966 trip to Marrakech with Pierre Bergé. The show includes a section on the Romanian blouse motif, a costume Matisse designed for Diaghilev's 1919 ballet "Le Chant du rossignol," and Saint Laurent's later homage to the Ballets Russes. Matisse's late ventures into fashion—a 1946 silk scarf with Zika Ascher, designs for liturgical vestments—are juxtaposed with Saint Laurent's "LOVE" greeting cards. The exhibition runs until September 28, 2026.
