Mathijs Hunfeld's '// NOTHING UNWANTED' at Koppel Project Examines Consumer Culture

In May 2026, Mathijs Hunfeld, a Dutch multidisciplinary artist and a 2024 graduate of the Royal College of Art MA Contemporary Art Practice, unveiled '// NOTHING UNWANTED' at The Koppel Project, in collaboration with Attiyyah Rahman. This exhibition delved into how identity is shaped in a digital era where AI intertwines reality with fiction and screens pervade everyday existence. The conceptual approach juxtaposed the horizontal plane of material reality against the vertical plane of a fictional desire screen. Featured works included three Gashapon machines, symbolizing social media's reward mechanisms, alongside pieces like 'NOW I'LL BE ANGEL' and 'WE HAVEN'T LOCATED US YET', with titles that were essential to their meaning. Utilizing diverse materials such as chocolate, toy cars, plastic bags, and packing tape, Hunfeld's art draws inspiration from figures like Liam Gillick and Olafur Eliasson. His critical engagement with design methodologies reflects his background in product design and luxury retail, while also acknowledging the authentic enjoyment found in digital culture, rather than merely framing it as addiction. Additionally, philosophical elements, such as Jean-Paul Sartre's 'The Transcendence of Ego', were woven into his work.
