Masquespacio Transforms 1800s Valencia Ground Floor into Maora Ceramic Showroom
Masquespacio has completed the Maora ceramic showroom in Valencia, a 60-square-metre historic ground floor dating to 1800, treating the building's constraints—inclined walls, low ceilings, scarce light—as design assets. Commissioned by Amparo, founder of Maora, and her children, the studio led by Ana Hernández and Christophe Penasse designed the space to exhibit handmade tiles as excavated finds rather than retail inventory. The concept, 'Fragments of Tradition,' integrates the building's history as a narrative element. The floor uses unglazed terracotta herringbone with glazed dark lines, while walls are clad in glazed tiles of varying sizes. The colour palette ranges from warm terracotta to pale beige. Inclined walls are treated as symbols of time's layers, with tile grids bending to follow curves. The showroom, located at Calle Montornés 11 in Valencia's old town, was completed in June 2025. Masquespacio's prior collaboration with Maora on a ceramic collection informed the project. The design redefines ceramic showroom design as curation rather than display, making constraint a material.
