MASP Opens Major Group Show 'Histórias Latino-Americanas' with 187 Works

On September 4, 2026, the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) will open 'Histórias Latino-Americanas', a large-scale group exhibition occupying five galleries of the Pietro Maria Bardi Building. The show brings together 187 works by 148 artists from 20 countries, examining how colonization, migration, resistance movements, and nation-building projects have shaped diverse narratives about Latin America. Curated by Amanda Carneiro and Julieta González, the exhibition spans from pre-colonial to contemporary art, featuring paintings, documents, maps, sculptures, photographs, installations, textiles, and videos. The display is organized into five thematic nuclei: 'O mundo ao revés', 'Retórica do progresso', 'Sociedades americanas', 'Estamos em salsa', and 'A queda do céu'. Notable commissioned works include Mariana Castillo Deball's 'Nuremberg Map of Tenochtitlan', a large-scale reproduction of an early European map of the Aztec capital, and pieces by JAMAC, Marcela Cantuária, Marcelo Cidade, Manuel Chavajay, Maurício Lupini, and Podeserdesligado. The exhibition is part of MASP's 2026 curatorial cycle on 'Histórias', following previous shows like 'Histórias Afro-Atlânticas' (2018) and 'Histórias Indígenas' (2023). A bilingual catalog (English/Portuguese) will be published, with editorial texts by Adriano Pedrosa, Amanda Carneiro, and Julieta González. The show runs from September 4, 2026, to January 31, 2027, and is sponsored by Nubank and Vivo.
