Masako Miki Transforms Japanese Yokai into Playful Sculptures at Moody Center

Masako Miki's captivating installation at Rice University's Moody Center for the Arts showcases vibrant wool sculptures inspired by Japanese yokai spirits. Open until August 15, 2026, the exhibition features more than twelve pieces, with heights ranging from 32 to 78 inches. Among the notable displays is "Contemplating Crescent Moon" (2026), a striking purple and blue piece suspended above. Other highlights include "Patient Stirrup Sprite" (2021), depicting a joyful yellow figure on legs, and the unique "Blissful One-Eyed Spirit" (2018), resembling a gray armchair. Miki’s work is celebrated for depicting yokai as friendly beings promoting joy and connection.
