Masaaki Noda's Steel Calligraphy Surveyed at GOCA by Garde

exhibition · 2026-10-20

Mirror-polished stainless steel ribbons, silkscreen prints and mixed-media reliefs fill a career-spanning solo show for Masaaki Noda at GOCA by Garde (Garde Gallery of Contemporary Art). Titled Masaaki Noda: FROM FORM TO FORCE, the free presentation follows the Japanese-born, New York-based artist's decades-long effort to fuse East Asian calligraphy's fluid lyricism with Western abstraction's structural weight. Works on paper, acrylic paintings and recent dimensional sculptures are placed in dialogue to trace one consistent inquiry: kinetic energy. Noda's signature sculptures loop and twist like ribbons suspended mid-air, their reflective surfaces blurring the line between mass, light and open space while pulling surrounding architecture and viewers into the work. Bronze appears alongside stainless steel, translating the speed, weight and breathing rhythm of brushwork into three-dimensional form. Wall-mounted mixed-media reliefs, built from layered metals and vivid hues, occupy the ground between painting and sculpture through rhythmic depth and shifting shadow. The two-dimensional pieces are framed as the graphic foundation behind Noda's large-scale architectural commissions worldwide. Admission is free and open to the public.
