Martin Mc Nulty's Family-Curated Retrospective at Galerie Épisodique

exhibition · 2026-06-15

At Galerie Épisodique in Paris, a retrospective of British-born artist Martin Mc Nulty (b. 1966) presents an imaginary epic of stranded constellations, dark matter, and landscapes at the scale of a face. Curated by Alexandra Roussopoulos and Joan Ayrton, the exhibition reinterprets Mc Nulty's work through the voices and hands of those close to him. Roussopoulos, an artist whose studio was long adjacent to Mc Nulty's and mother of their daughters Callisto and Silvana Mc Nulty, gathered the latter—a video artist and a visual artist respectively—to contribute. Remarkably, Mc Nulty's gallerists were also invited as artists: Patricia Dorfmann executes varnish paintings as homage, while Marie-Victoire Poliakoff adds drawn figures to monumentalize Mc Nulty's iridescent meteors. A dollhouse for future archaeologists emerges in the space. Handmade-stretched canvases display color duels with black from floor to ceiling. The artist claims anyone could do it, translating the world to essentials with simple forms and colors applied like masonry. Magical slag archipelagos are created alchemically from mattress scraps collected on the street. A light-flooded room presents drawings from Mc Nulty's notebooks, and visitors can take a poster designed by Stéphane Mortier from a Mc Nulty sculpture that transforms into a three-dimensional work when folded. The exhibition runs until June 18, 2026, at 23 Pass. de Ménilmontant, 75011 Paris.
