Martin Labbé's Screwless Pine Chair for Stockholm Gelato Shop

Stockholm-based architect and designer Martin Labbé has created a compact wooden chair from standard 45 x 95 mm pine construction timber, assembled entirely without screws or metal hardware. The chair, named 'Mesón y Silla,' was developed as part of a furniture intervention for a small gelato shop. Labbé uses traditional mortise-and-tenon joints and wooden dowels, leaving the joinery exposed as a defining visual feature. The project also includes a fixed bar table placed against the wall opposite the service counter to optimize circulation during peak hours. Each chair was hand-fabricated by Labbé, who sanded the pine extensively and treated it with linseed oil to preserve the grain and tactile quality. The design emphasizes the material's everyday origins, treating construction lumber as finished furniture. The chair's straightforward silhouette and tectonic logic mirror the bar, condensing the same principles into a movable object.
