Marta Jovanović and Cristiano Leone Perform Mystical Wedding in London

On June 6, artist Marta Jovanović and curator Cristiano Leone performed 'Nuptiae Mysticae', a ritualistic wedding ceremony at Fitzrovia Chapel in London, presented by Gallery Rosenfeld during London Gallery Weekend. The performance explored the relationship between care and creation, using 99 vows written on wafers that were spoken and ingested. The act concluded with a tattoo of a continuous line on both performers' hands, symbolizing permanent commitment. The work drew on the tradition of mystical marriage, referencing figures like Catherine of Siena and John of the Cross, as well as the Rosicrucian text 'The Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz'. Jovanović and Leone described the piece as a manifesto for shared responsibility in the art world, emphasizing care as a creative act. The chapel, built 1891–1892 as part of the demolished Middlesex Hospital, served as a venue reflecting themes of survival and disappearance.
