Mark Cavagnero Associates Reveals Mass Timber U.S. Embassy Design for Tallinn

Mark Cavagnero Associates (MCA), in collaboration with local firm ESPLAN, has revealed designs for a new U.S. embassy compound in Tallinn, Estonia. This initiative marks the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations' (OBO) inaugural use of mass timber. The new chancery will take the place of a historic building from the 1930s and will showcase a facade made of Estonian limestone arranged in a 'folding composition.' Spanning 205,000 square feet and eight stories, the structure will feature a two-story central gallery and will be engineered for heat retention and temperature regulation. The 4-acre site will also include native Baltic trees. OBO purchased the land in 2023, with the project slated for completion in 2031. The U.S. embassy in Tallinn resumed operations in 1992 after being closed in 1940.
