Mario Pieroni Remembered by Segno Editor as Mentor, Friend and Constant Interlocutor
The editor of the Italian art magazine Segno has published a personal tribute to Mario Pieroni, recalling a relationship that began in childhood, when Pieroni was a familiar presence in the editor's family home and a friend of his mother, Lucia. The editor writes that he and Pieroni later worked together, initially through the mediation of his parents, Umberto and Lucia, and that Pieroni treated him as a trusted interlocutor rather than merely as someone's son. From April 2020, when Segno was published in digital form only during the pandemic, the editor consulted Pieroni on virtually every issue, valuing his advice and his sustained interest in the magazine's future. He singles out Pieroni's phone calls asking his opinion as the memory he will keep most, describing them as a mark of Pieroni's approach to relationships. In 2022 Pieroni brought him to Copenhagen for an exhibition at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, where the editor recalls Pieroni as the most active, curious and enthusiastic member of the group. He praises Pieroni's enduring passion for art, which never hardened into routine, and a rare modesty that led him to step back and leave space to artists even when he was the protagonist. The tribute closes with the editor's thanks for what Pieroni did for art, for Segno, for his family and for him personally.
