Marina Abramović Dies Seven Times in Cisternerne Installation

At Cisternerne in Copenhagen, Marina Abramović presents 'Seven Deaths,' an installation featuring seven films where she meets her demise in operatic settings, accompanied by arias from Maria Callas. This marks the debut of the films in an immersive format, inviting viewers to traverse the underground cisterns to witness each death. The films, starring Abramović and Willem Dafoe, reinterpret iconic female death moments from operas such as 'La traviata,' 'Tosca,' and 'Madama Butterfly.' Abramović dies three times, while Dafoe is responsible for two deaths, with one involving both characters. The work delves into themes of heartbreak and gender, with Abramović portraying a bullfighter in 'Carmen.' The exhibition is open until 30 November 2026, having first appeared at Lisson Gallery in London in 2021 and during the '7 Deaths of Maria Callas' opera tour from 2020 to 2023.
