Marin Ireland's 'Pre-Existing Condition' Returns to New York with Rotating Cast Including Lupita Nyong'o

Marin Ireland's inaugural play, Pre-Existing Condition, is being showcased at the Greenwich House Theater in New York until January 8, 2027. The production features a rotating ensemble cast that includes Lupita Nyong'o, Phillipa Soo, and Edie Falco. Ireland, recognized with a Tony nomination for Reasons to Be Pretty in 2009, dedicated over ten years to crafting this narrative centered on the repercussions of domestic violence. The story follows protagonist A, who escapes her abusive partner but encounters degrading treatment from the legal system and confusion within a support group. The play debuted in 2024 at the Connolly Theatre, directed by Maria Dizza, with Tatiana Maslany, Tavi Gevinson, and others portraying A. Ireland notes that the piece is primarily fictional and aims to challenge stereotypes surrounding abuse survivors.
