Mariela Scafati's 'Nombrar el mundo' at Condeduque, Madrid

The first solo exhibition in Spain of Argentine artist Mariela Scafati, 'Nombrar el mundo', is on view at the Sala de Bóvedas of Contemporánea Condeduque in Madrid from April 24 to July 19, 2026, curated by Marta Ramos-Yzquierdo. The show explores how painting can produce relationships rather than images. Scafati presents modular, human-scale painted forms dressed in borrowed clothing from friends (Dai, Devo, Estela, Guille, Lola, Magui, Manu, Nico), with their words painted on the fabric. A series titled 'Faldas banderas' (2003–2026) transforms her own skirts into banners inscribed with words like 'Paz' and 'Libertad', first used during a protest against the Iraq war. Recent works stem from a residency at Collegium in Arévalo, Spain, where Scafati stayed in the former home of seamstress Maribel (radio alias 'La Flecha Negra'), creating wall murals and mobiliary compositions using hemp ropes and local hardware. The exhibition also includes the sound piece 'Radio Eléctrica Artesanal' (2010–2012), made with Lola Granillo, adding voices to the collective conversation. Scafati's practice reconfigures monochrome and modernist traditions through affective bonds, making the artwork itself a relation.
