Marie Tomanova's 344 Polaroid Self-Portraits at Harkawik

At Harkawik gallery in New York, Marie Tomanova's exhibition titled 'Three Empty Weeks in July' showcases 344 Polaroid self-portraits that she captured daily throughout 2022, with the exception of a three-week hiatus in July. The Czech-born photographer, now based in New York, initiated this project to rekindle her creative spirit after experiencing burnout from releasing two monographs and overseeing several exhibitions in 2021. This series, her largest self-portrait endeavor, resonates with the works of artists like Nan Goldin, Melissa Shook, Friedl Kubelka, and Yurie Nagashima. Tomanova views it as a journey of self-discovery and identity, utilizing her body as a genuine form of expression. The exhibition will be open until July 18, and she intends to undertake this project every five years, with the next cycle beginning in 2027.
