Mariano Fortuny: The Artist Who Transformed Venice into His Creative Laboratory
Born in Granada, Spain, in 1871, Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo emerged as a significant artist in Venice after relocating to Paris and then to Venice. He formed friendships with prominent individuals such as Gabriele D'Annunzio and Henriette Negrin, who would later become his wife and artistic partner. His work, influenced by Richard Wagner, led him to set design, where he created the sets for the 1900 premiere of Tristan and Isolde at La Scala and invented the 'Dome' lighting system in 1906. In 1907, he designed the silk dress known as 'Delphos'. In 1919, he established a factory on Giudecca Island. Following his passing in 1949, the Palazzo Pesaro degli Orfei was transformed into the Fortuny Museum in 1975, displaying his collection and 20th-century Italian art.
