Marianne Rosenberg revives family legacy with Giacomo Manzù exhibition in New York

Marianne Rosenberg, a former aviation finance lawyer turned gallerist, opened 'Giacomo Manzù: The Artist and his Dealer' at her Upper East Side gallery Rosenberg & Co., running until June 27. The show explores the decades-long relationship between her father Alexandre P. Rosenberg and Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzù, featuring bronzes, works on paper, and archival letters. It is Manzù's first New York exhibition since 1985. Marianne, who launched her gallery in 2015, comes from a storied art-dealing family: great-grandfather Alexandre Rosenberg acquired works by Cézanne and van Gogh in late 19th-century Paris; grandfather Paul Rosenberg represented Matisse, Léger, and Picasso, becoming a cornerstone of the 20th-century art market. The family fled Nazi-occupied France in 1940, losing artworks and archives. Paul recovered about 300 works; Alexandre served in the Free French Forces. The family recently secured restitution of a Pissarro painting, but over 50 works remain missing. Paul's meticulous records are now at MoMA's Paul Rosenberg Archives. Marianne reconnected with Manzù's daughter Giulia while seeking a certificate of authenticity, leading to the exhibition. Key works include 'Standing Cardinal' (1972) and 'Cestino' (1984).
