Maria Finitzo's Rediscovered Arctic Photographs Debut at Perspective Gallery

From September 3 through the end of the month, Maria Finitzo, who is a filmmaker, writer, and photographic artist from Chicago, will present her exhibition 'Ice & Light' at Perspective Gallery in Evanston, Illinois. This collection features photographs from 1993, captured on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian High Arctic, and they hadn't been seen for three decades. Rediscovered during the pandemic, these original color transparencies have been printed using the platinum/palladium process to enhance their tonal depth and durability. Finitzo's work, inspired by Barry Lopez's 'Arctic Dreams,' reflects on photography as a tool for memory, focusing on a landscape impacted by climate change. An opening reception is scheduled for September 12 from 5-7pm, followed by an artist talk on September 17 from 7-9pm. Finitzo has been connected with Kartemquin Films for over 30 years, earning several awards, including three George Foster Peabody Awards and the Alfred E. duPont Award. Her recent film, 'The Dilemma of Desire,' premiered at SXSW in 2020, after which she returned to her photography roots. Her work has been showcased in various places like the Chicago Civic Center and the Center for Photographic Art.
