Maria Anto's 'Courageous Sluggard' Exhibition at lokal_30 Marks 90th Birthday Year
Lokal_30 in Warsaw is currently hosting the exhibition 'Courageous Sluggard,' celebrating the 90th birthday of artist Maria Anto (1936–2007). This marks her inaugural solo exhibition at the gallery, curated by Agnieszka Rayzacher and Olga Madler. Anto, a Warsaw native, held her first solo show at Zachęta Gallery when she was thirty, where she created the self-portrait titled 'Courageous Sluggard.' This title serves as a critique of the expression 'courageous and sluggish' often used by male artists. Anto, influenced by her mother Nelly Egiersdorff and her educational background, was involved with prominent figures and showcased her work at the 7th São Paulo Biennial in 1963. The exhibition includes early sketches and pieces that reflect her life. In 2018, the Maria Anto and Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven Art Award was established to support women artists.
