Marcus Wedman's 35-Year Journey from Graffiti to Photorealistic Spray Art

Marcus Wedman has spent over three decades mastering spray painting techniques in Drachten, Netherlands. His artistic journey began in the early 1990s when graffiti-engaged friends introduced him to the medium. He discovered that skillfully executed graffiti could serve as a deterrent to vandalism rather than contributing to it. Wedman expanded his toolkit by incorporating airbrushing, which enabled him to create photorealistic works through combined techniques. After earning a bachelor's degree in Art & Design from Northern University of Applied Sciences in Leeuwarden, he worked as a graphic designer and DTP specialist at Norddesign advertising agency from 1998 to 2013. This professional experience significantly influenced his graffiti practice, while his street art background enhanced his design work with typography, geometry, and color expertise. Since registering with the Chamber of Commerce in 2011 and becoming fully independent in July 2013, Wedman has operated as a special paint artist and graphic designer. In his current workshop, he experiments with innovative methods that blend spray cans, airbrushes, and traditional brushes to produce striking imagery. His work represents a distinctive fusion of graffiti aesthetics, photorealism, and expressive flamboyance.
