Marc Chagall's 97-Year Journey from Vitebsk to Paris

Marc Chagall, who was born in 1887 in Vitebsk, cultivated a distinctive artistic style shaped by influences such as Surrealism, Orphic Cubism, and Fauvism. His early life in a poor Hasidic Jewish family sparked his passion for painting. After his studies in Saint Petersburg, he relocated to Paris in 1910, where he produced notable pieces like "La modella" and "Il villaggio russo visto dalla luna." He wed Bella Rosenfeld in 1915. World War I left him stranded in Vitebsk, resulting in the loss of numerous artworks. In 1923, he made his way back to Paris, where he received commissions from Ambroise Vollard. The emergence of Nazism caused some of his works to be destroyed. Chagall addressed the Holocaust in pieces such as "La guerra." He passed away on March 28, 1985, at the age of 97.
