Manitoba Premier Calls Trump 'Erratic' and 'Not to Be Trusted' Amid Canada-US Trade Talks

On Thursday, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew delivered a strong denunciation of US President Donald Trump, labeling him a 'bad person' and 'untrustworthy' amid the ongoing trade discussions between Canada and the US. Kinew emphasized the importance of Canada holding its ground instead of hastily agreeing to concessions, despite Prime Minister Mark Carney advocating for the reinstatement of US alcohol sales in Manitoba to facilitate a deal. Federal minister Dominic LeBlanc noted that the two nations are 'very close' to reaching an agreement following his discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington. Trump has referred to the prospective deal as 'very fair,' and tariffs on about US$20 billion in Canadian imports have been delayed until 12:01 am Saturday. While Kinew criticized Trump, he suggested Manitoba might align with Carney's request as part of a 'Team Canada' initiative, encouraging consumers to prioritize Canadian products. Support for Carney's negotiation strategy has also been expressed by other provincial leaders, including those from Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia.
