Malmö's New Art Museum: Casino Site, Architectural Competition, and Funding Challenges
Since 1937, Malmö konstmuseum has been housed in Malmöhus Castle, but it will soon relocate to the former casino in Kungsparken. The museum's collection boasts 40,000 pieces spanning from the 16th century to the present, including works by notable artists such as Sigrid Hjertén and Anders Zorn. Last year, the cultural committee selected the casino site, recognizing the necessity for a central location. An architectural competition has been launched for both renovations and a new addition, as the existing casino lacks the required 6,500 square meters. The estimated cost for the project is between 650 and 750 million SEK, funded by Malmö stad, which will not cover the annual operating expenses of 30 million SEK. A donation fund must raise at least 200 million SEK, with the new facility anticipated to open in 2031.
