Makino's Neon-Filled Outdoor Sculptures at Entrance in Brooklyn
Mariko Makino's exhibition titled 'Outside' is currently showcased at Entrance in Red Hook, Brooklyn, featuring outdoor sculptures crafted from galvanized steel fencing and neon tubes that interact with natural light. Running until September 6, 2026, the exhibit includes a focal piece called '5 x 5 Meadow,' which consists of 24 sculptures, each under four feet tall, illuminated in shades of blush and bronze. Makino drew inspiration from the power infrastructure in Freehold, New York, where her studio is located, as well as from living ecosystems. The exhibition also displays indoor pieces within Entrance's shipping-container gallery. Founder Louis Shannon has extended gallery hours for evening visits, hosting community events like grilling and performances. Supported by a grant from the Clementine Fund, the exhibition marks the fourth at Entrance and is the first to utilize the entire lot between Wolcott and Dikeman Streets. Additionally, Makino, a former chef, prepares dinners for guests every two weeks.
