MAK Vienna Showcases 70 Historic Architectural Construction Kits in Interactive Exhibition

From 7 October 2026 to 14 March 2027, the MAK in Vienna will present 'Architectural Construction Kits 1890-1990 Plenty to Play With!' Curated by Oliver Elser and organized by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, this exhibition showcases 70 architectural construction kits from the collection of graphic designer Claus Krieger, spanning the years 1880 to 1960. Visitors can engage with eight interactive play stations and a VR installation, utilizing materials such as wood, metal, rubber, and Galalith. A standout feature is a cathedral measuring 2.6 meters in length and 3.2 meters in height, constructed from 4,000 felt blocks in collaboration with Professor Andreas Kretzer and HFT Stuttgart students. Elser highlights that approximately 900 companies in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland produced these kits, raising questions about their target audience.
