Maia Toakley on Her London EP, 'Everything On Fire' and Leaving Architecture Behind
Maia Toakley, a musician from Sydney, began crafting her own songs while pursuing an architecture degree, using songwriting as a way to escape the academic pressures; by the time she graduated, she had amassed a collection of original pieces. After spending about five years in the Eora/Sydney music scene, she moved to London, renting a room above a Camden pub, borrowing a guitar, and dedicating her time to writing. The songs were later produced at The Confectionery Studios on King St in Newtown with Charlie Tait. Her single "Everything On Fire" received significant online attention, which Toakley found surreal and "beautifully wild." An upcoming EP promises to showcase greater conviction, with less self-pity and more confidence. Additionally, she designs her own merchandise, posters, and cover art, attributing her skills in Photoshop to her architecture studies. She highlights Aldous Harding's Train on the Island as her favorite album of the year.
