Magritte's Pipe Becomes a Functional Chair in Taekhan Yun's Design

Designer Taekhan Yun has created "This Is Not a Chair," a seating object that takes the form of René Magritte's iconic pipe from "The Treachery of Images." The project explores the relationship between form, function, and perception, questioning whether a chair is defined by its appearance or its ability to support the body. Yun translated Magritte's two-dimensional pipe into a three-dimensional object using styrofoam reinforced with paper pulp, finished with acrylic paint and varnish. The work includes a Magrittean apple alongside the pipe. Rather than offering a definitive answer, the piece suggests that object meaning emerges from the interaction of physical properties, intended use, and user interpretation.
