Magali Reus's New Sculptures at Kunstverein Freiburg

At Kunstverein Freiburg, Dutch artist Magali Reus unveils new sculptures that delve into themes of seduction and deception, examining the economies of attention and desire. These pieces are crafted from a blend of production techniques, ranging from traditional handicraft to industrial mass manufacturing, resulting in a diverse material ecosystem. Their shapes evoke recognizable forms yet remain ambiguous in purpose and identity. The sculptures are displayed within a specially designed scenography, appearing as ethereal entities. Works from the Rig series, mounted on walls, resemble large fishing lures or earrings, engaging with the allure of attraction. Meanwhile, the freestanding Streamers evoke images of dying spruce trees and fish skeletons, reminiscent of bygone excess. This arrangement illustrates cycles of consumption, from the initial allure of a product, driven by design and packaging, to its eventual rejection and decay, with discarded remnants reclaiming their glamour.
