Magali Reus Reimagines Disposable Objects in 'Swimming by Night' at the Perimeter, London

From 25 September to 16 December, the Perimeter in London will showcase 'Swimming by Night,' an exhibition by sculptor Magali Reus, who was born in the Netherlands and is now based in London. The display includes large-scale replicas of everyday disposable items such as pizza boxes and sardine tins, crafted from aluminium and resin. In her Subs series, Reus transforms pizza boxes into aluminium forms adorned with images of discarded Christmas trees. One of her notable pieces, Rig (All Eyes On), features an oversized candy heart inscribed with 'Let's Hang.' Through her work, Reus explores themes of overconsumption and waste, creating sculptures that feel both familiar and strange. Her meticulous process involves shaping sheet metal and layering paint on resin, leading viewers to often confuse the aluminium for cardboard.
