Mae Engelgeer transforms Kyoto temple's textile archive into contemporary artworks

Dutch textile artist Mae Engelgeer is showcasing 'Utsuroi Hymn' at Ryosokuin, a Zen temple dating back to the 14th century in Kyoto, with the exhibition running until 7 July 2026. This project transforms ancient textiles from the temple's collection into modern pieces, such as byobu screens, kakejiku-style hangings, and woven rugs. Engelgeer, who moved from Amsterdam to Kyoto in 2023, collaborated with deputy head priest Toryo Ito to explore the archive. The artworks reflect the passage of time, featuring faded edges and hidden linings. Engelgeer has also partnered with Hosoo, a kimono textile firm, and furniture designer Karimoku. Future endeavors include 'Tsudoi / Gathering' at Karimoku Commons Kyoto, transitioning to Tokyo in July, and 'Echoes of Wa' at Spazio Nobile in Brussels with ceramics artist Hosai Matsubayashi in September.
