Madrid Hosts First Italian Design Week Featuring Radical Alchimia Retrospective

From February 15 to 21, 2026, Madrid was the site of the first Italian Design Week, organized by Regina De Albertis. A highlight of the event was the exhibition 'Alchimia. La rivoluzione del design italiano' at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Madrid, which was curated by François Burkhardt, Tobias Hoffmann, and Alessandro Guerriero, and produced by ADI Design Museum and Bröhan-Museum. This exhibition focused on the Milanese group Alchimia, established by Alessandro and Adriana Guerriero, which redefined design from 1976 to 1992, featuring influential figures like Alessandro Mendini and Ettore Sottsass. Notable displays included the 'tappetozattera' structure and the concept of 'banal design.' In 1981, Alchimia received the Compasso d'Oro award. Italian Ambassador Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi underscored the importance of design in fostering international communication.
