Madmax Gallery Opens in Historic Marseille Mansion This August

Against the trend of gallery closures, Madmax, a new contemporary art gallery, opens in Marseille on August 29, 2026. Founded by architect Maxime Vignolles, the gallery is located at 10 Rue du Coq in a Belle Époque building in the Réformés district, formerly housing the private bank Zarifi & Cie. The 170-square-meter space spans two floors, renovated by Atelier Aïno. The inaugural exhibition, 'Unfinished,' features Czech artist Matouš Háša (b. 1992) with new marble sculptures exploring Michelangelo's concept of non-finito. This is Háša's first solo show in France; he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, Middlesex University in London, and the Libera Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. The gallery's program is curated with David Pons of Marseille's SPF50 curatorial space and publisher Tendre. Vignolles chose Marseille over Paris for its vibrant, unconventional creative scene and the building's historic character. The opening coincides with the 20th edition of the Art-o-rama fair (August 28–30, 2026).
