MADEYOULOOK's 'Mafolofolo' Uses Sound to Explore Land Dispossession and Repair

Johannesburg-based collaborative MADEYOULOOK, comprising Molemo Moiloa and Nare Mokgotho, presents 'Mafolofolo' at Hangar – Artistic Research Centre in Lisbon. The exhibition uses immersive sonic installations, oral histories, and liberation songs to trace histories of land dispossession in Southern Africa, focusing on the Koni people and communities affected by mining and corporate interests. Sound functions as an archive and method, exploring call-and-response as both formal and conceptual framework. The work addresses loss as a living condition, not a concluded event, and proposes repair as ongoing practice. It highlights Black everyday experiences on a historical continuum, revealing enduring relationships between people, land, and the more-than-human world through totems, naming practices, rituals, and songs. The exhibition includes the sound installation 'Dinokana' (2024), previously shown at the South African Pavilion of the Venice Biennale. MADEYOOK emphasizes that repair is unfinished business and preparedness for inevitable future breaks. The exhibition runs until 5 June 2026.
