MABI Architects Transforms 1983 Osaka Bathhouse Enmeiyu into Shizunoyu Fukushima

architecture-design · 2026-10-14

MABI ARCHITECTS has transformed Enmeiyu, a public bathhouse crafted by Yoshiji Takehara in 1983, into Shizunoyu Fukushima, a men-only bathing venue located at 5-12-5 Fukushima, Fukushima-ku, Osaka, Japan. The renovation maintains the building's signature curved shapes and unique tile designs while adding new areas for relaxation and social interaction. Efforts were made to keep as many original tiles in the washing section as possible, maintaining ties to the previous bathhouse. New amenities comprise a cold plunge pool, sauna, outdoor bathing space, indoor relaxation area, and bar counter, all harmoniously integrated with the original architectural elements. This project, which fosters community connections and encourages intergenerational gatherings, credits Yusuke Sakurai for signage, Hiroaki Endo of NEWMAN Inc. for the logo, Kikuchi Soken Co., Ltd. as the general contractor, and collaborators SCIENCE Inc., Tile Capsule (BOWCS Inc.), and Nakamura Inc. Photography is by dig photograph, and the project was submitted via designboom's DIY submissions feature, edited by Christina Vergopoulou.
