Maarten Vrolijk's Hypnotic Glass Vessels Fuse Multiple Disciplines

Maarten Vrolijk, an artist based in Amsterdam, crafts large, radiant glass vessels through a meticulous technique that involves breaking, heating, and fusing glass pieces onto blown shapes. He refers to this approach as "painting with glass," emphasizing the need to embrace the unpredictability of molten glass. His creations have garnered the attention of notable figures such as Elton John, Christian Louboutin, and designers Michael S. Smith and Suzanne Kasler. Vrolijk's work can be found at Todd Merrill Studio in New York, Vessel Gallery in London, Objects With Narratives in Brussels and Geneva, and Collectional in Dubai. After studying at Design Academy Eindhoven in 1985 with Hella Jongerius and Piet Hein Eek, he gained recognition for his hand-painted textiles in various exhibitions, including one organized by Paola Antonelli at the Museum of Modern Art. He later directed art for Rosenthal and Royal Leerdam, producing mass-market collections. At 50, he decided to pursue art free from commercial pressures, which he describes as "the best present I could have ever given myself." Vrolijk embraces a variety of mediums, including glass, ceramics, painting, and textiles, asserting his desire for creative freedom.
